Note, too that the Kobo Clara HD (Figure 1) and Kobo Glo HD seem among the most popular models to hack. The closest thing to a centralized site for information is the Kobo Hacks and Utilities Index, but do a web search for additional scattered information. To show what can be done with hacks, I’ll cover several of the most useful documented hacks. These experiments sometimes make Kobo a moving target for hackers, but its primary use of the open ePub format makes it popular among those who prefer not to use the proprietary formats like MOBI used by Kindle. For instance, Kobo’s first releases supported a Debian client, and several of its early devices used LCD displays rather than e-ink. Over the years, the company has shown a strong tendency to experiment with its hardware, no doubt in an attempt to increase its market share. The company also hosts its own site for ebooks and audio books. Rakuten Kobo is a Toronto-based company, whose products are a distant second to Kindle e-readers in market share. Still, the variety and ingenuity of known modifications is proof of how determined the free hardware and software communities are to bypass the arbitrary restrictions imposed by proprietary hardware. Moreover, as always when hacking, you may sometimes risk bricking your device. New Kobo models are released frequently, so all documented hacks do not work for every e-reader, especially hardware hacks. However, while I have used Kobo e-readers for a decade, I only recently started to explore Kobo’s hacker community. Any piece of proprietary hardware eventually spawns a community of hackers.

But first we’ll explain how to establish passive and active FTP connections. Below we’ll explain what’s behind the two different modes and why passive mode is sometimes necessary. In passive mode, the server lets the client establish the connection and simply confirms it. The difference lies in the role of the server: In active mode, the server initiates the connection. There is also a difference between FTP passive mode and active mode. What is the difference between FTP passive mode and active mode? ¶ Problems with the transfer of data are communicated using a status code and can then be solved using a new command. The use of two separate channels ensures that contact between client and server is possible at any time. Transfers can take place bidirectionally, going from server to client or client to server, depending on which commands are given. However, the data itself is sent and received using a second channel, the data channel. Authentication with username and password is usually required for using this FTP port.ĭata transfers are initiated or aborted using the control channel. The client sends commands to the server, and the server responds to each command with a status code. The control channel is only used for sending FTP commands. The answer lies in the roles of the two ports. You might be asking yourself why we need to use two FTP ports. After that, the client will establish a connection to port 20, which is referred to as the data channel. This is referred to as the command or control channel. The first step is to establish a connection between server and client on port 21. To ensure a smooth transfer, two FTP ports are normally used for File Transfer Protocol. It’s possible to transfer binary files like images and programs or text files in ASCII mode. Once you have the correct FTP port number, you can start your file transfer. It’s only possible to establish a secure connection when you know the relevant FTP port number. The port will use numbers from 0 to 65535 for this. Madge: Yeah, I did build the tank and the SRBs. Hopefully when people build it, they'll learn a bit about the shuttle, which they might not have done from a smaller scale model.ĬS: Once you settled upon the scale, was there any consideration about including the external tank and solid rocket boosters used to the launch the orbiter as well? But by adding those details and being able to explain some of them through the building instructions, we are really taking people on a bit more of a journey. We would normally not include that level of detail on a Lego model. So by going up to that scale, we could include the Canadarm and the cameras and the crew cabin. I think the Lego Ideas Saturn V rocket that we released a few years ago really set the bar for the level of detail that we could achieve in our space sets and we wanted to continue that with this shuttle. We were also able to achieve lots of the fun, little details that we would normally leave out. Madge: The thing that really inspired that scale was the Hubble Space Telescope and the STS-31 mission because normally, when we do a space shuttle, the payload bay is kind of, well, I don't want to say an afterthought, but it's often smaller than it should be because of the constraints of working with Lego bricks.īeing able to go up to that scale meant that we could get the walls of the shuttle thin enough so that we could keep the Hubble in an accurate scale to the orbiter. Why did you choose the 1/70th scale? What was it about that particular size? When we had to pick a mission, we jumped straight for STS-31 because it was what informed our childhood understanding of the space shuttle.ĬS: This is the largest space shuttle Lego has released. So I think there was some sort of subconscious inspiration there. I didn't have it, but I remember looking at it in the catalog. And I remember looking at that set as a kid and being totally blown away by it. Madge: Not specifically, as in we we didn't look at anything and say, "Let's do it like that." However, having said that, a couple of us that were heavily involved in this project grew up with the Discovery shuttle that Lego released in 2003. Did you look back at any of those sets for inspiration or to borrow building techniques for the new space shuttle Discovery? There have been more than a dozen sets that have been modeled after the orbiter, at different scales and level of detail. (Image credit: Lego)ĬS: As many know, this is not the first time Lego has released a space shuttle. The new Lego NASA Space Shuttle Discovery set reproduces the winged orbiter and Hubble Space Telescope in detail. ![]() Related: 10 cool facts about space shuttle Discovery There were also technical manuals online that were really fun to look through to find cross sections of the shuttle, the profile of the wings and things like that. With the Hubble, there's a certain configuration of the payload bay to get to the telescope to fit in. Also technical details, like what was placed where on STS-31 in comparison to other missions. ![]() So we were able to ask really specific questions and they were able to provide really specific feedback, like which logos, for example, were used on certain missions, whether it should be the NASA "worm" or the "meatball," and things like that. So we were just downloading images of the specific mission and shuttle to help inform our design.īut then we also were working really closely with NASA and some of their technical advisors. The most obvious one is the archive on NASA's website, it's just full of amazing images. CollectSPACE (cS): So you came into this project as fans of the shuttle, but given the level of detail you were able to include, were they any specific references you turned to while designing Discovery? |
